The Alignment Method: key to Paebbl’s $25 Million Fundraising Success

ARTICLE

Paebbl, one of our portfolio company of 2050 specializing in CO2 storage in building materials, has just raised $25 million in a Series A round. This success highlights the effectiveness of the alignment method developed by 2050 and We Are Human (WaH), a pioneering investment fund that has supported Paebbl since 2022.

Alignment: a major asset in attracting strategic investors

Paebbl’s fundraising was led by Capnamic, with participation from major players such as The Climate Pledge Fund (Amazon) and Holcim, a global leader in building materials. This diverse range of investors testifies to the strength of the aligned approach promoted by 2050 and Wah.

“We are thrilled to welcome early mover leaders in their respective fields, Amazon and Holcim, as first commercial partners that will help bring our vision to the market rapidly; aligning interests is at the core of our go-to-market model.” Andreas Saari, Co-founder & Co-CEO, Paebbl

“The alignment work has meant that we were able to not just align our own priorities within the company, but also with the investors that we’ve then brought on board and also the commercial stakeholders like our customers or our strategic investors.” Marta Sjogren, Co-founder & Co-CEO, Paebbl

The Alignment Method: A transformation tool

Developed since April 2023 with We Are Human, the alignment method aims to create coherence between a company’s long-term mission, its financial goals, and its positive impact on the environment and society.

For Paebbl, this approach has enabled:

  1. Clarification and strengthening of its long-term mission
  2. Identification and resolution of potential misalignments in its value chain
  3. Maintenance of alignment throughout the fundraising process
  4. Integration of Key Aligned Performance Indicators (KAPIs) into its strategy

For us, tracking align performance means tracking the finances of our company and the financial health and the environmental health of the company. We’re just building in place standard metrics for measuring the societal or social equity performance of the company as well.

Andreas Saari, Co-founder & Co-CEO, Paebbl

I believe that it is the responsibility of investors out there to play a pivotal role in actually building better companies, the aligned method, to me as a founder and also as an experienced investor, is by far the best way that I have seen so far in creating a whole new generation of fundamentally better companies.

Marta Sjogren, Co-founder & Co-CEO, Paebbl

What you actually need to do as an investor now is to align your own interests with those of the stakeholders of the company, but also society and the planet in time. And this is what we call alignment, and this is why we developed all these alignment methodology to support our companies with the period that we’re in right now.

Marie Ekeland, Founder & CEO, 2050

Towards a generalization of the aligned approach

Building on this success, 2050 and We Are Human plans to publish a preliminary version of its Aligned Company Method by the end of 2024, followed by a first version of the Aligned Investor Method in 2025. The goal is to demonstrate how net positive impact can be positively correlated with financial performance, thus inspiring new practices in the venture capital industry and beyond.

We’re also at a very interesting place where the new things is about to evolve and the new methodologies are about to happen, and when they do, things are going to happen at scale. Sindre Østgård, Chief Alignment Officer, 2050
